Vallarta Botanical Gardens reveals conservation work protecting hundreds of threatened species
The Vallarta Botanical Gardens has released its 2025 Annual Report, providing detailed insight into conservation and research activities that extend far beyond the cultivated displays familiar to its nearly 60,000 annual visitors.
Located south of Puerto Vallarta, the nonprofit institution has evolved from degraded cattle pasture into one of western Mexico's primary centers for plant conservation since its founding in 2004. The report documents a mission encompassing habitat protection, botanical research, environmental education and sustainable community development.
Conservation at scale
The gardens maintain more than 1,200 plant species and hybrids in its living collection, with approximately 1,000 species flowering throughout the year. Among these are roughly 30 species endemic exclusively to Jalisco, representing about 10% of the state's endemic flora. Jalisco harbors 412 plant species found nowhere else on earth, part of a total vascular flora of 7,110 species that establishes the state as a biodiversity hotspot.
The institution protects at least 60 plant species officially classified by Mexican authorities as at-risk. More than 250 species in the collection appear on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's lists as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered. These include five threatened magnolia species native to Jalisco, among them Magnolia vallartensis and Magnolia ofeliae, both critically endangered.
Beyond its garden gates, the organization has protected 120 hectares of forest land in the Los Horcones River Basin, with 32 hectares certified as protected natural areas by the Government of the State of Jalisco in 2023. The basin's river represents the last free-flowing waterway to the sea in Puerto Vallarta municipality and provides habitat for river otters, green macaws and large felines.
Research and propagation
Scientific work forms a core component of operations. In 2008, the gardens partnered with University of Guadalajara researchers to conduct the first orchid inventory of the Los Horcones River Basin, documenting 50 native species. That research laid groundwork for ongoing conservation efforts.
The institution operates an in vitro orchid propagation laboratory that cultivates over 10,000 orchids annually from seed, covering 35 different species. Four of these species are critically endangered. This work holds particular significance given that Mexico hosts approximately 1,500 orchid species, making it among the richest countries in the Americas for orchid diversity.
Staff members conduct ongoing research to develop cultivation techniques for native plants that have never been extensively cultivated. This knowledge contributes to preservation efforts both within Mexico and internationally, supporting the gardens' function as a living laboratory where horticulture and conservation science intersect.
Educational mission
Environmental education programs brought more than 1,000 Mexican schoolchildren through the gardens last year. Hands-on experiences connect students with native ecosystems and biodiversity while teaching about regional environmental challenges and conservation solutions.
The institution received formal recognition as a Wildlife Conservation Management Unit from Mexico's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in 2010, establishing its official conservation credentials.
Conservation gaps and future challenges
The report arrives as global conservation data reveals significant gaps in plant protection. Only 18% of threatened plant species worldwide are maintained in ex situ collections such as botanical gardens or arboretums, underscoring the critical role institutions like Vallarta Botanical Gardens play in safeguarding biodiversity.
Climate change, urban development and habitat loss continue placing pressure on wild populations throughout western Mexico. For many species native to the region, cultivated collections may become increasingly important as natural habitats face mounting threats.
Visitor admissions, memberships and donations fund the gardens' scientific research, conservation initiatives and educational outreach. This model allows tourism to directly support environmental protection while providing the public access to both natural beauty and scientific knowledge.
The annual report serves as both an accounting of resources invested and an invitation for continued community involvement through memberships, volunteer work and charitable giving. It reveals an institution functioning simultaneously as tourist destination, research center and conservation organization committed to protecting western Mexico's botanical heritage for future generations.
