96-year-old woman marries 18-year-old man in Mexico, setting age-gap record

A marriage registered in the southeastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo has set a new national record for age difference between spouses, with a 96-year-old woman marrying an 18-year-old man, creating a 78-year gap between the couple.

The marriage was documented by Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the autonomous government agency responsible for coordinating the country's statistical and geographical information system. Among the 491,640 marriages registered across Mexico in 2025, this union represents the most significant age disparity recorded during the year.

Quintana Roo, located on the eastern side of the Yucatán Peninsula along the Caribbean coast and home to major tourist destinations including Cancún, recorded a marriage rate in 2025 nearly three times higher than Mexico City, though this elevated rate does not necessarily translate to a greater total number of weddings.

Other notable age-gap marriages in 2025

The second-largest age gap documented in 2025 occurred in the state of Michoacán, where a 96-year-old woman married a 19-year-old man. The third-largest difference was recorded in Tamaulipas, where a 90-year-old man married an 18-year-old woman.

Legal requirements for marriage in Mexico

Both parties in these marriages meet Mexico's legal requirements for matrimony. Since amendments to the Federal Civil Code in June 2019, the minimum marriage age stands at 18 years without exceptions. The General Law on the Rights of Children and Adolescents, established in 2014, initially set 18 as the minimum age, eliminating previous provisions that allowed girls to marry at 14 and boys at 16 with parental consent.

Age gaps in global and Mexican context

To place these extreme age differences in context, global marriage data shows that age gaps between spouses typically range from about one year in Ireland to 7.8 years in Senegal. In Mexico specifically, 35% of married women in 2020 were 10 or more years younger than their husbands, demonstrating that age gaps are relatively common, though differences of several decades remain highly unusual.

Statistics indicate that average marriage ages in Mexico have been rising, increasing by 4.1 years for both women and men over the past decade. This trend reflects broader demographic shifts in marriage patterns across the country.

While the 78-year age gap represents an unprecedented record for Mexico, historical records show that significant age differences in marriages have occurred in other contexts. In 1879, King William III of the Netherlands married Queen Emma when he was 41 years older than his 20-year-old bride, though this gap was still considerably smaller than the Mexican record.

Research on global marriage patterns confirms that in heterosexual marriages worldwide, men typically marry women younger than themselves, with age gaps generally decreasing as countries develop economically and socially.
