Elaborate heist nets thieves 1 million pesos from Puebla currency exchange

A sophisticated theft at a currency exchange in Puebla city has captured national attention after criminals executed a carefully planned operation reminiscent of fictional heist dramas, making off with an estimated 1 million pesos (approximately $57,000).

The crime unfolded Sunday night in the Santa Cruz Buenavista neighborhood, where a group of thieves drilled through walls, circumvented security systems and escaped with the substantial haul before employees discovered the breach the following morning.

How the operation unfolded

The perpetrators initiated their plan by entering a neighboring physiotherapy clinic, which shares a wall with the targeted currency exchange. Wearing clothing designed to hamper identification, they operated under cover of darkness to drill through the connecting wall, creating an entry point that led directly to the exchange's bathroom area.

Once inside the facility, the criminals removed a door and strategically positioned it to obstruct the view of interior security cameras. This maneuver allowed them unrestricted movement through the cash storage area while preventing the main alarm systems from detecting their presence.

Employees arrived Monday morning to find a hole penetrating the bathroom area, prompting immediate notification of security authorities.

Second incident in one month

The robbery marks the second time the same currency exchange has been targeted in less than 30 days, a pattern that has intensified investigative scrutiny. The repeated victimization of the establishment has raised questions among authorities about potential security vulnerabilities or insider knowledge.

Officials from the Puebla State Attorney General's Office (Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado), which oversees investigation and prosecution of state and local crimes, are gathering physical evidence and analyzing the criminals' route. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from both the currency exchange and surrounding properties to identify the perpetrators, who remain at large. Authorities have not disclosed the number of individuals involved in the operation.

Regional crime context

The heist occurred in a state grappling with broader criminal activity challenges. Puebla state has experienced ongoing conflicts involving organized crime and fuel theft, particularly in an area known as the Red Triangle, according to U.S. State Department security assessments. Government data recorded 77,244 reported crimes in Puebla state in 2023, placing it at a crime rate index of 58.23, considered fairly moderate.

The region between the Port of Veracruz and Puebla has seen elevated rates of cargo theft and vehicle robbery, indicating significant property crime challenges in the area.

Currency exchange operations in Mexico operate under anti-money laundering regulations requiring registration with the Tax Administration Service and filing of transactional reports analyzed by the Financial Intelligence Unit. These facilities also face restrictions on the amounts of physical U.S. dollar cash they may receive, measures implemented in 2010.

The methodical nature of Sunday's theft has drawn comparisons on social media to the Netflix series La Casa de Papel (Money Heist), a fictional drama depicting elaborate robberies. The comparison underscores the calculated planning evident in the Puebla operation, from the strategic entry point to the camera-blocking technique that allowed the thieves to operate undetected.
