PROJECT 5,000-capacity Divine Mercy Convention Center rising in El Salvador City
PROGRESS Metro Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao
Construction is underway on the Divine Mercy Convention Center within the Divine Mercy Shrine Complex in El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental. The facility is designed to accommodate approximately 5,000 participants and will serve as a venue for religious conventions, conferences, retreats, and gatherings of Catholic organizations from the Philippines and internationally.
The convention center represents a significant expansion of the shrine complex, which was completed in 2008 and spans nine hectares of land overlooking Macajalar Bay. The complex is anchored by a 50-foot statue of Jesus as the Divine Mercy, which has become a landmark for the region. The land was acquired for a nominal amount and the shrine's development has been funded through donations.
El Salvador City, a municipality of 62,126 residents across 15 barangays according to the 2024 census, has emerged as a major pilgrimage destination. The city was granted cityhood on June 27, 2007, with the status affirmed on February 15, 2011 following legal challenges. The Divine Mercy is recognized as the city's official patron, with celebrations held on the Sunday after Easter.
Major Pilgrimage Destination
The Divine Mercy Shrine has established itself as the leading pilgrimage destination during Holy Week in Misamis Oriental, drawing thousands of devotees annually. The shrine's significance reached new heights on April 27, 2025, when the Philippines became the first nation in the world to consecrate itself to Divine Mercy. The shrine hosted the largest Divine Mercy celebration globally that day, attracting over 57,000 pilgrims from across Asia.
The new convention center forms part of the shrine's broader development strategy to support its religious mission and provide infrastructure for worship, reflection, and fellowship. The facility will enable the complex to host large-scale gatherings of pilgrims and visiting religious communities throughout the year.
Strategic Location and Economic Impact
The shrine's location approximately 30 minutes by taxi or rideshare from Laguindingan Airport positions it advantageously for attracting both domestic and international visitors. Laguindingan Airport is Mindanao's second-busiest airport after Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City, having handled 2,265,767 passengers in 2024.
This accessibility is expected to help establish El Salvador City as a regional hub for religious conventions. Local economic sectors including hotels, restaurants, transportation providers, and other businesses stand to benefit from increased visitor traffic generated by convention activities.
The Divine Mercy Shrine is one of 14 shrines dedicated to Divine Mercy across the Philippines, according to the Association of Catholic Shrines in the Philippines. These include six shrines in Luzon, three in the Visayas, and five in Mindanao, reflecting the widespread devotion to Divine Mercy throughout the country.
The convention center project continues the transformation of El Salvador City into what local authorities have designated as the Divine Mercy City of the Philippines, building on the municipality's identity as a center for religious tourism and pilgrimage in Northern Mindanao.
