Hurricane Trudy disrupts cruise itineraries along Mexico Pacific coast
Hurricane Trudy has forced significant disruptions to cruise operations along Mexico's Pacific coast, with multiple cruise lines cancelling scheduled port calls and rerouting entire itineraries as the storm intensified to Category 3 strength with sustained winds of 120 mph on 16 October 2026. Forecasters warned the hurricane could potentially reach Category 4 status with winds approaching 145 mph.
Major cruise line cancellations and diversions
Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Bliss, a vessel carrying up to 4,002 passengers and 1,700 crew, cancelled its scheduled Acapulco call on 17 October and substituted a day at sea instead. The decision came as Hurricane Trudy positioned itself approximately 230 to 300 miles southwest of Acapulco when it reached hurricane status on 15 October.
Virgin Voyages took more dramatic action with its Brilliant Lady, the company's newest ship which entered service in September 2025. The vessel, which can accommodate approximately 2,770 passengers, cancelled its entire Mexican Riviera route scheduled from 17 to 24 October and diverted to a US West Coast itinerary. Brilliant Lady is the only ship in Virgin's fleet capable of transiting the Panama Canal.
Ruby Princess cancelled its Manzanillo call on 18 October due to dangerous coastal conditions, while Carnival Spirit diverted away from the storm path and cancelled its scheduled Puntarenas call in Costa Rica.
Severe weather threatens Pacific coast
The storm threatened to bring severe weather conditions to Mexico's Pacific coast, with forecasts predicting 4 to 8 inches of rainfall across Colima and Jalisco states, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 12 inches. These conditions prompted cruise lines to prioritize passenger safety over maintaining scheduled itineraries.
Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed that passengers who had booked official shore excursions for cancelled ports would receive full refunds credited to their onboard accounts. Other affected cruise lines are expected to implement similar refund policies.
Official warnings and travel advisories
The US Embassy in Mexico issued a weather alert for the Pacific coast, specifically targeting the states of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco. The alert warned of dangerous rip currents and rogue waves that posed risks to coastal areas and maritime operations.
WestJet responded to the hurricane threat by issuing flight advisories for Puerto Vallarta, offering passengers affected by the storm increased flexibility for rebooking or cancellations.
Record-breaking hurricane season
Hurricane Trudy represents the tenth hurricane to form in the Eastern Pacific during 2026, marking the first time since 2018 that the basin has produced ten major hurricanes in a single season. The 2026 eastern Pacific hurricane season has already set a record for accumulated cyclone energy with 331 units as of 15 October, surpassing the previous full-season record of 318 units established in 2018. The disruptions occurred during the peak activity period of the eastern Pacific hurricane season, which officially runs from 15 May to 30 November, with the most intense storms typically forming between July and October.
