Ballet Folklórico CADEA to Perform at Historic Teatro Juárez

Ballet Folklórico CADEA will take the stage at Teatro Juárez in La Paz on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 6:00 PM, presenting an evening of traditional Mexican folk dance that celebrates the nation's rich cultural tapestry.

The performance will showcase the colorful traditions of ballet folklórico, an art form that encompasses dances from Mexico's diverse regions through distinctive zapateado footwork, striking regional costumes, and choreography that often draws inspiration from local animals. The genre reflects a unique blending of Indigenous, African, and European heritage that has shaped Mexican cultural identity.

About Ballet Folklórico CADEA

Ballet Folklórico CADEA, affiliated with the Secretaría de Educación of Baja California Sur, has established itself as a prominent cultural ambassador for the region. The company regularly participates in major events including the annual Mitote Folklórico and La Paz Carnival, which boasts more than 100 years of history as one of Mexico's oldest carnival celebrations.

The Historic Teatro Juárez

The venue for this performance carries its own historical significance. Teatro Juárez was constructed beginning in 1906 and inaugurated on September 15, 1910, to commemorate the centennial of Mexican independence. The intimate theater features a classic Italian-style layout with a capacity of 289 seats. After being closed and abandoned in 1984, the venue was rescued through restoration efforts undertaken by the Patronato de la Cultura de Baja California Sur in 1997.

Today, Teatro Juárez operates as a municipally managed cultural space and stands as one of La Paz's most important venues, hosting theater, concerts, dance, film, exhibitions, workshops, and community events throughout the year.

Ballet Folklórico: A Living Tradition

The modern ballet folklórico movement gained prominence in the 1950s and 1960s when the Mexican government began subsidizing folk dance companies for their aesthetic and social value. Choreographer Amalia Hernández pioneered the theatrical evolution of the art form with the founding of Ballet Folklórico de México in 1952, establishing a model that companies like CADEA continue to follow.

Cultural Tourism in La Paz

The performance comes as La Paz experiences growth in cultural tourism, with the city receiving 841,400 tourists during the first half of 2026, an 11.4% increase compared to the same period in 2025. International tourism to the region increased 41.6% between January and July 2026.

La Paz maintains a robust calendar of cultural programming throughout the year, including the Foundation Festivities each May, which feature dance, music, theater, and visual arts events centered at the Malecón.

Event Details

Tickets for the October 16 performance are priced at $9. The event offers audiences an opportunity to experience authentic Mexican folk artistry through dynamic choreography and live musical accompaniment in one of the city's most historic and architecturally significant venues.
