Devossion Plans Maya-Inspired Día de Muertos Celebration at Cenote Spa

Devossion by Live Aqua Playa del Carmen will bring "A Journey to Xibalba" to its Cenote Spa on November 1-2, 2026. The adults-only resort's Día de Muertos event draws on Maya beliefs about the underworld, according to a Fiesta Americana Travelty Collection press release.

Inside the Xibalba celebration

The resort calls the celebration its most ambitious Día de Muertos offering of the year. Its inspiration, Xibalba, is understood in Maya cosmology as an underground realm associated with water, darkness and gods of death, through which souls pass before reaching their final destination. Devossion's interpretation emphasizes an experience beyond the ordinary rather than a somber observance.

Promotional imagery previews the setting: a catrina stands amid hundreds of candles inside the cenote, surrounded by ancient stone and deep-blue water. The press release says guests will encounter that aesthetic during the event.

The venue's architecture evokes the cenotes beneath the Yucatán Peninsula. Described by the resort as its sensory center, Cenote Spa is also where the celebration's most immersive elements will take place.

Beyond the event, the spa has eight treatment rooms or suites and offers a menu incorporating sacred Mayan practices, according to Trazeetravel's June 2026 report and the resort's fact sheet. Its wellness offerings also include daily beachfront yoga, meditation and sound-healing sessions.

Seasonal events and previously announced plans

The November 1-2 experience sits within a broader fall and winter calendar. A Fiesta Americana Travelty programming roundup published October 8, 2026, lists Tuesday Taco Nights, Halloween celebrations on October 31, a November 2 Día de Muertos celebration and a Thanksgiving celebration at the Playa del Carmen property.

Earlier in the year, Trazeetravel reported plans for a June 2026 beach club opening, alongside signature experiences including the 1:26 Champagne Toast and Kahlo Privé. That June report also outlined a summer 2026 opening for Devossion Lounge, reserved for suite guests, with oceanfront views and guest DJs.

The Playa del Carmen property and brand expansion

Devossion is an oceanfront, all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen, steps from Fifth Avenue. The press release identifies it as the newest Mexican Caribbean property in the Fiesta Americana Travelty Collection. Its amenities include eight restaurants and Club Access with a VIP lounge, while nighttime programming includes the outdoor Bubbles Soirée.

The property celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, February 14, 2026. Trazeetravel characterized the occasion as a significant milestone for Grupo Posadas and Live Aqua. Grupo Posadas CEO José Carlos Azcárraga linked the opening to Live Aqua's 20th anniversary, describing it as a new chapter for the brand.

Designed by Mexican architecture firm Sordo Madaleno, the resort is about 45 minutes from Cancún International Airport, according to its official fact sheet. It has 314 guestrooms and suites, including 36 suites with king-size beds, two of them presidential suites. The inventory also includes 27 swim-up rooms and 22 plunge-pool rooms.

A second Devossion hotel is planned for Isla Mujeres, with an opening scheduled for November 15, 2026, according to a September 30 report from Global Agents UK. The report places that planned opening within Fiesta Americana Travelty's strategy to extend the concept beyond Playa del Carmen.
