Fall on the festival's closing night

Local news outlets identified the woman as Gabriela Rodríguez Tezoco. Another passenger recorded footage showing her slipping out of the restraints and then being thrown from the ride.

The fair celebrated the Feast of St. Luke. According to Milenio, the fall occurred on the night of October 20, 2026, as that year's Cabo San Lucas Traditional Festivals (Fiestas Tradicionales de Cabo San Lucas) concluded in Baja California Sur.

Rodríguez Tezoco graduated from high school in 2026. She belonged to the 2023-2026 class at Colegio de Bachilleres (Colbach) Plantel 10 Las Palmas-Cabo San Lucas, whose staff offered condolences to her family, Milenio reported.

Investigators examine the ride and safety procedures

The Baja California Sur State Attorney General's Office (PGJE) opened a criminal investigation and sought specialists in architecture, engineering and safety to establish the probable cause of the fall. Authorities secured both the ride and the accident area as a precaution. Prosecutors also began examining whether required operating safety protocols had been followed.

As of around October 22, 2026, authorities had neither identified the ride's operators nor made any arrests, Fox News reported, citing local outlet Expreso.

Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez said in a social media post that he had been following developments since learning of the death. He said his first thoughts were with the young woman and her family, and that he had directed officials to provide the support they needed while respecting their privacy.

Agúndez also ordered a preventive safety review of the fair's rides while authorities worked to determine what happened. He described visitors' safety as his priority, promised updates when confirmed information became available and asked the public to show respect for Rodríguez Tezoco and her family.

The fairground uses temporary, traveling-style attractions run by independent companies, according to Entertainment Weekly, citing Cabo Sun. That report said the city council ordered inspections of every attraction at the site.

The accident also prompted a leadership change at the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection and Risk Management. Milenio reported that Diego Camacho Hale replaced Francisco Cota Márquez as its head. Camacho Hale was to oversee work to close out the fair and supply information requested by authorities.

Separate death at Six Flags Over Georgia

In a separate incident near Atlanta, 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem died in a fall from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia. Atlanta-based ABC affiliate WSB-TV reported that four other people were injured and taken to a hospital. Authorities had not disclosed the nature of their injuries or their conditions.

After that death, Six Flags temporarily closed nine additional roller coasters across its international parks as a precaution, Entertainment Weekly reported. One of those rides, also named Goliath, has since reopened at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California.
